To prevent a cassette from being accidentally recorded
over
Break out and remove the cassette tabs. To reuse the cassette for
recording, cover the tab hole with adhesive tape.
Playing a Tape

Insert a cassette with the side to start playing facing the lid.

Select the tape speed to the same speed as that used for
recording.

backward during playback (CUE/REVIEW), the mCUE/MREVIEW
switch may not return to the center position when you release the switch.
In this case, push back the switch to the center to start playback.
If you plug in headphones (not supplied) to the EAR jack, you
will get monaural output from both left and right channels.
To increase the playback speed (M-647V/645V/640V
only)
Slide the FAST PB switch in the direction of the arrow. The
playback speed will be increased.
To return to the original speed, slide the FAST PB switch to the
original position.
At the end of the tape
In the recording or playback mode, the tape stops at the end of
the tape and the locked buttons will be released automatically
(Automatic shut-off mechanism).
After fast forward or rewind, be sure to set mCUE/
M
REVIEW back to the center.
Recording/Playback with the
Connected Equipment
(M647V/645V/640V only)
Recording from another tape recorder
Connect another tape recorder to the MIC jack using the RK-
G64HG connecting cord (not supplied).
Set this unit to the recording mode and another tape recorder to
the playback mode. In this case set VOR to OFF.
Recording with an External Microphone
Connect a microphone to the MIC jack.
M-647V for the United States : use the supplied microphone.
Other models : use a microphone of low impedance (less than 3
kilohms) such as ECM-T6 (not supplied). When using a plug-in-
power system microphone, the power to the microphone is
supplied from this unit.
Note
When recording with an external microphone, the VOR system may not
work properly because of the difference in sensitivity.
Precautions
On power
·Operate the unit only on 3 V DC.
For AC operation, use the AC adaptor recommended for the
unit. Do not use any other type. For battery operation, use two
size AA (R6) batteries.
On the unit
·Use only the
(standard microcassettes) with this
unit. Non-standard cassettes cannot be used because their "L"
dimension (see illustration) is different.
·Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a
place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or mechanical
shock.
·Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, remove the
batteries or disconnect the AC power adaptor, and have the
unit checked by qualified personnel before operating it any
further.
·Keep personal credit cards using magnetic coding or spring-
wound watches etc. away from the unit to prevent possible
damage from the magnet used for the speaker.
·When you do not use the unit for long, remove the batteries to
avoid damage caused by battery leakage and subsequent
corrosion.
·If the unit has not been used for long, set it in the playback
mode and warm it up for a few minutes before inserting a
cassette.

Connect the AC power adaptor to DC IN 3V and to a wall outlet.
Use the AC power adaptor (supplied with M-645V only) or the
AC-E30HG AC power adaptor (not supplied). Do not use any
other AC power adaptor.
Note
Specifications for AC-E30HG vary for each area.
Check your local voltage and the shape of plug before purchasing.
Rechargeable batteries (supplied with
M-645V only)
Charge the rechargeable batteries only with the supplied charge
adaptor and the AC power adaptor. The rechargeable batteries
can be charged approximately 500 times.
Be sure to charge the rechargeable batteries for approximately 8
hours before using them. The unit can be used for recording for
approximately 6.5 hours with the fully charged rechargeable
batteries.
To charge
The power indicator of the charge adaptor remains lit as long as power is
supplied from the wall outlet.
To use
Notes
· Use the supplied two rechargeable batteries only with the supplied
charge adaptor.
· If there is distortion of sound or excessive noise, or if the unit does not
operate properly, turn off the unit and recharge the two rechargeable
batteries together.
· The rechargeable batteries will discharge even when not in use. Be sure
to charge them before use.
· Recharge the two rechargeable batteries together. Otherwise, the
charging cannot be done.
· Be sure to remove the rechargeable batteries from the charge adaptor to
avoid overcharging (more than 20 hours) when charging has been
completed.
· Charging and operation should be made in temperature ranges 5
°C to
40
°C (40°F to 104°F).
· The charge adaptor will become warm during charging but this is not a
sign of problem.
· Do not use or leave the charge adaptor in a location near heat sources or
in a place subject to direct sunlight or excessive moisture.
· Unplug the AC power adaptor from the wall outlet when it is not to be
used for long.
· Do not attempt to charge dry batteries.
Recording
Make sure that nothing is connected to MIC (M-647V/645V/
640V only).

Press the reset button of the TAPE COUNTER.

Select the desired tape speed.
2.4 cm for optimum sound (recommended for normal use):
A 30-minute recording can be made using both sides of the
MC-30 microcassette.
1.2 cm for longer recording time: A 60-minute recording can
be made using both sides of the MC-30 microcassette.

Set VOR to H, L or OFF.
If you set VOR to H or L, the unit automatically starts
recording the sound and pauses when there is no sound
(you can save tapes and batteries).
H : To record at meeting or in a quiet and/or spacious place.
L : To record for dictation or in a noisy place.
When the sound is not loud enough, set it to OFF, or the unit
may not start recording.

is pressed simultaneously and recording starts. While
the tape runs, the REC lamp or REC/BATT lamp lights and
flashes depending on the strength of the sound.

Note
Select the 2.4 cm tape speed for recording, if you play back the recorded
tape with another unit. Otherwise, the sound quality may be changed.
Notes on VOR (Voice Operated Recording)
· The VOR system depends on the environmental conditions. If you
cannot get the desired results, set VOR to OFF.
· When you use the system in a noisy place, the unit will stay in the
recording mode. If the sound is too soft, on the contrary, the unit will
not start recording. Set VOR to H (high) or L (low) depending on the
conditions.
To monitor the sound
Connect an earphone (not supplied) to EAR jack. The monitor
volume cannot be adjusted by VOL.

The instructions in this manual are for 5 models. The M-645V is
the model used for illustration purposes.

Preparing Power Sources
Choose one of the following power sources.
Dry Batteries
Make sure that nothing is connected to the DC IN 3V jack.

Open the battery compartment lid.

Insert two size AA (R6) batteries with correct polarity and
close the lid.
To take out the batteries
If the battery compartment lid is accidentally
detached
Attach it as illustrated.
When to replace the batteries
For M-545V/540V
Replace the batteries with new ones when the REC/BATT lamp
dims.
For M-647V/645V/640V
Replace the batteries with new ones when the BATT lamps go
off and the E lamp flashes.

Notes
· The unit will play back normally for a while, even after the E lamp
flashes. However, replace the batteries as soon as you can. If you do not,
the playback cannot be made with normal sound, noise may be
recorded and the recorded sound will not be loud enough (M-647V/
645V/640V only).
· In the following cases you do not need to replace the batteries:
­ if the REC/BATT lamp or BATT lamps flash with the playback sound
when you turn up the volume.
­ if the E lamp lights momentarily when the tape starts running or at
the end of the tape (M-647V/645V/640V only).
­ if the E lamp flashes during FF (CUE) or REW (REVIEW) (M-647V/
645V/640V only).

Troubleshooting
Should any problem persist after you have made these checks,
consult your nearest Sony dealer.
A cassette cannot be inserted.
t The cassette is being inserted in the wrong way.
t n has been already pressed.
Playback cannot be made.
t The tape has reached the end. Rewind the tape.
t The batteries are weak. Replace both batteries with new
ones.
t The head is contaminated.
Recording cannot be made.
t There is no cassette in the cassette compartment.
t The cassette tab has been removed.
t The batteries are weak. Replace both batteries with new
ones.
t The head is contaminated.
t Improper setting of the VOR switch.
Recording is interrupted.
t The VOR switch is set to H or L. When you do not use
VOR, set it to OFF.
During CUE/REVIEW the tape stops or does not run.
You cannot fast-forward or rewind.
t The batteries are weak. Replace both batteries with new
ones.
The unit does not operate.
t The batteries have been inserted with incorrect polarity.
t The batteries are weak. Replace both batteries with new
ones.
t>PAUSE is slid in the direction of the arrow.
t The AC power adaptor is connected to the unit only and
you are going to use the unit on batteries.
No sound comes from the speaker.

Tape speed is too fast or too slow in the playback

the direction of the arrow.
Recording cannot be erased completely.

Maintenance
To clean the tape head and path
Press n and wipe the head, capstan and the pinch roller with a
cotton swab, moistened with alcohol every 10 hours of use.
To clean the exterior
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened in water. Do not use alcohol,
benzine or thinner.

Reemplace las pilas.
Notas
· La unidad reproducirá normalmente durante un momento aunque
parpadee el indicador E. Sin embargo, reemplace las pilas lo antes
posible. Si no li hiciese, la reproducción no podría realizarse con el
sonido normal, podría grabarse ruido, y el sonido grabado no sería
suficientemente alto (M-647V/645V/640V solamente).
· En los casos siguientes, no necesitará reemplazar las pilas:
­ Si el indicador REC/BATT o los indicadores BATT parpadean con el
sonido de reproducción cuando aumente el volumen.
­ Si el indicador E se enciende momentáneamente cuando la cinta

Nota

Alimentación doméstica
Conecte el adaptador de alimentación CA a DC IN 3V y a la

Nota

Para impedir que una cassette se grabe
accidentalmente
Rompa y retire las lengüetas de la cassette. Para volver a utilizar
la cassette para grabar, cubra el orificio de la lengüeta con cinta
adhesiva.
Reproducción de cintas

Nota

al soltarlo. En este caso, desplace el interruptor a la posición central para
iniciar la reproducción.
Si conecta auriculares (no suministrados) a la toma EAR, los
canales izquierdo y derecho emitirán sonido monofónico.
Para aumentar la velocidad de reproducción (M-647V/
645V/640V solamente)
Deslice el interruptor FAST PB en la dirección de la flecha. La
velocidad de reproducción aumentará.
Para volver a la velocidad original, deslice el interruptor FAST
PB hasta la posición original.
Al final de la cinta
En el modo de grabación o reproducción, la cinta se detiene
cuando llega al final y los botones bloqueados se liberan
automáticamente (mecanismo de desconexión automática).
Asegúrese de ajustar mCUE/MREVIEW en la posición
central después del avance rápido o el rebobinado.
Grabación/reproducción con el
equipo conectado
(M647V/645V/640V solamente)
Grabación desde otra grabadora de cintas
Conecte la otra grabadora a la toma MIC utilizando un cable
conector RK-G64HG (no suministrado).
Ponga esta unidad en el modo de grabación y la otra grabadora
de cintas en el modo de reproducción. En este caso, ponga VOR
en OFF.
Grabación con un micrófono externo
Conecte un micrófono a la toma MIC.
M-647V para Estados Unidos: utilice el proveído micrófono.
Otro modelo: utilice un micrófono de baja impedancia (menos
de 3 kiloohmios) como el ECM-T6 (no suministrado). Cuando
utilice un micrófono con alimentación a través de la clavija, la
alimentación del mismo la suministrará la unidad.
Nota
Cuando grabe con un micrófono externo, el sistema VOR puede no
trabajar adecuadamente debido a la diferencia de sensibilidad.
Precauciones
Acerca de la alimentación
·Utilice la unidad sólo con 3V CC.
Para utilizar CA, utilice el adaptador de CA recomendado para
la unidad. No emplee otro tipo de adaptador. Si va a utilizar
pilas, emplee dos pilas R6 (tamaño AA).
Acerca de la unidad
·Utilice sólo
(microcassettes estándar) con esta
unidad. Los cassettes no estándar no pueden utilizarse porque
su dimensión "L" (consulte la ilustración) es diferente.
·No coloque la unidad cerca de fuentes de calor ni en un lugar
expuesto a la luz del sol, a cantidades de polvo excesivas o a
golpes mecánicos.
·Si se introduce algún objeto sólido o se derrama líquido dentro
de la unidad, extraiga las pilas o desconecte el adaptador de
alimentación de CA y haga que personal cualificado revise la
unidad antes de volver a utilizarla.
·Aleje las tarjetas de crédito personales con codificación
magnética o los relojes de cuerda, etc., de la unidad para evitar
que se produzcan posibles daños por el imán del altavoz.
·Si no va a utilizar la unidad durante un periodo de tiempo
prolongado, extraiga las pilas para evitar que se produzcan
daños derivados de fugas del electrolito o corrosión.
·Si la unidad no se ha utilizado durante varios días, active el
modo de reproducción y deje que se caliente durante unos
minutos antes de insertar una cinta.
Baterías (suministradas con la M-645V
solamente)
Cargue las baterías solamente con el adaptador para carga y el
adaptador de alimentación de CA suministrados. Las baterías
podrán cargarse unas 500 veces.
Cerciórese de cargar las baterías durante unas 8 horas antes de
utilizarlas. La unidad podrá utilizarse para grabación durante
unas 6,5 horas con las baterías completamente cargadas.
Para cargar
El indicador de alimentación del adaptador para carga permanecerá
encendido mientras esté suministrándose alimentación del tomacorriente
de la red.
Para utilice
Notas
· Utilice las dos baterías solamente con el adaptador para carga
suministrado.
· Si se produce distorsión del sonido, o hay ruido excesivo, o si la unidad
no funciona adecuadamente, desconecte la alimentación de la unidad y
recargue juntas las dos baterías.
· Las baterías se descargarán incluso aunque no las utilice. Cerciórese de
cargarlas antes de utilizarlas.
· Recargue las dos baterías juntas. De lo contrario, la carga no podría
realizarse.
· Cerciórese de extraer las baterías del adaptador para carga cuando haya
finalizado la carga a fin de evitar que se sobrecarguen (más de 20 horas).
· La carga y la operación deberán realizarse a temperaturas
comprendidas entre 5 y 40°C.
· El adaptador para carga se calentará durante la carga, pero esto no
significa problema alguno.
· No utilice ni deje el adaptador para carga en un lugar cercano a fuentes
térmicas ni sometido a la luz solar directa ni a humedad excesiva.
· Cuando no vaya a utilizar el adaptador de alimentación de CA durante
mucho tiempo, desenchúfelo del tomacorriente de la red.
· No intente cargar pilas.
Grabación
Cerciórese de que no haya nada conectado a MIC (M-647V/
645V/640V solamente).

Pulse el botón de restauración de TAPE COUNTER.

Pulse xZ e inserte una microcassette estándar con la cara
que desea grabar mirando hacia la tapa.

Seleccione la velocidad de cinta que desee.
2.4 cm para obtener un sonido óptimo (recomendado para
uso normal): Es posible realizar una grabación de 30
minutos utilizando las dos caras de una cinta microcassette
MC-30.
1.2 cm para mayor tiempo de grabación: Es posible realizar
una grabación de 60 minutos utilizando las dos caras de una
cinta microcassette MC-30.

Sitúe VOR en la posición H, L u OFF.
Si sitúa VOR en la posición H o L, la unidad inicia
automáticamente la grabación del sonido y activa el modo

Observaciones sobre VOR (Grabación activada por voz)
· El sistema VOR depende de las condiciones ambientales. Si no obtiene
los resultados deseados, sitúe VOR en la posición OFF.
· Al utilizar el sistema en un lugar ruidoso, la unidad permanecerá en el
modo de grabación. Por el contrario, si el sonido es demasiado bajo, la
unidad no comenzará a grabar. Sitúe VOR en la posición H (alto) o L
(bajo) según las condiciones.
Para controlar el sonido
Conecte el auricular (no suministrado) a la toma EAR. No es
posible ajustar el volumen de control con VOL.

Mantenimiento
Para limpiar el cabezal y la pista de la cinta
Pulse n y limpie el cabezal, el cabezal móvil y el cilindro de
paso con un bastoncillo de algodón humedecido en alcohol cada
10 horas de uso.
Para limpiar el exterior
Utilice un paño suave ligeramente humedecido en agua. No
emplee alcohol, bencina ni diluyentes.
