1.3 PDSP-1 Features
This digital sound projector is a completely new product furnished with features not found on conventional home theater
systems.
This unit produces multi-channel surround sound from a single panel, making unnecessary multiple speakers and wiring.
The new features of the PDSP-1 are introduced in the following:
1.3.1
Beam Control Technology
The PDSP-1's single speaker panel contains 254 speaker units, and produces directionally controlled sound radiated in a beam
pattern.
The channels radiated in this beam pattern utilize ceiling, walls and other room characteristics to reflect the sound in such a way
as to produce a multi-channel sound field.
Sound Beam Images
The following illustrations are images depicting how the sound beam radiated from the PDSP-1 arrive at the listening position.
In this way, the PDSP-1 produces surround sound that totally envelopes the listener.

Sound Settings to Match Room Characteristics
The professional setup technician uses a special setup microphone and computer to adjust the PDSP-1 settings to values
optimum for the specific installation location. To allow a variety of sound settings, the settings are recorded and later called up as
desired to produce different sound fields for different listening conditions.

2. Connections and Preparations
2.1 PDSP-1
Before beginning use of the measurement and setup software, install the PDSP-1 in its designated position, and if furniture has
been moved, replace it in its original position. In order to determine the actual PDSP-1 installation position, use section "3.2
Sound Beam Angle Adjustment (Steer)" to assure that the sound beam is in fact effectively reflected from ceilings and walls.
After the above conditions are met, use the RCA video cable (or S video cable) to connect the display to the PDSP-1, and turn on
power.
2.2 Subwoofer
Connect the subwoofer to the PDSP-1 and turn on power.
If the subwoofer is furnished with a volume control, set it to full level to allow maximum dynamic range from the system.
Even if the subwoofer has an internal cross-over, the PDSP-1 will substitute its own digital crossover, so either set the subwoofer
for bypass setting, or set the crossover to its highest possible effective frequency.
Also, when two subwoofers are used, they should be installed so far as possible either symmetrically to right and left of the
listening position, or symmetrically front and behind the listening position.

2.3 RS232C Cable
To allow data transmission from the setup computer to the PDSP-1, an RS232C cable is used to connect the two.
2.4 EDIROL UA-5 and Cable
Connect the EDIROL UA-5 to the computer's USB port, and turn on the computer's power.
Check the settings of the EDIROL UA-5.
Rear-panel settings:
ADV switch: OFF
INPUT VOLUME: middle range
OPTICAL/COAXIAL switch: OPTICAL
Front-panel settings:
REC SOURCE switch: ANALOG
SAMPLE RATE switch: 44.1 kHz
Using an optical fiber (digital) cable, connect the rear panel's OPTICAL OUT connector to the INPUT 2 OPTICAL connector on the
PDSP-1.
Using the PDSP-1's remote control unit, select INPUT 2.
Use an RCA pin cable to connect the OUTPUT R and INPUT R connectors.
Set up the microphone at ear level in the listening position, and point it straight upward. Connect the microphone plug to the
corresponding INPUT 1 jack on the front panel of the EDIROL UA-5.
Press the EDIROL UA-5's POWER switch to turn on the power, then wait a few seconds.
The front panel's MONITOR SW button/indicator will light. When this occurs, press the SW button/indicator until the indicator
goes out. In the same way, hold the PHANTOM 48V button/indicator depressed until the indicator lights.
